Starting Massage Therapy as a career?

Posted by admin on Jan 12, 2009

I am starting school for massage therapy in a month and would like insight of people that have taken the class and what they thought. Do you enjoy it and why?

I am currently attending school for massage. State laws are different so be sure to look into that if you aren't planing on practicing in the state you are going to school in.
As for classes depending on the pace it can be quite overwhelming. If it is something you love it is amazing to learn. I mean I am learning how to become a massage therapist. Wow.
The best thing to do to start to prep is start learning your human anatomy. Also find out what kind of massage will be taught at your college and read books on them to get an overview of what to expect. Getting a book list in advance on what you need to be reading for class can be great because you can purchase them ahead of time and often find places to get them cheaper.
You also need to learn how to take care of yourself. This means eating right, stretching, and getting the sleep you need. Get into good habits now you don't have to worry about that when you start classes.
Side note: if you have to bring your own sheets stock up on them so you don't have to worry about hitting the laundry mat every weekend. (even if it is a nice place to study!)

Stephanie W:

very much. You learn a lot of anatomy which I found interesting and you get to receive a massage almost every single day.

I graduated in December and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I learned so much about the human body, and more importantly…about having compassion for other people and myself. It truly has made me a better, kinder person.
Aside from that, I have an awesome new career. I actually got to assistant teach at the place I went to school right after graduating. This was part-time, so I worked at a massage clinic as well. There are many times while I am working where I ask myself "is this really my job?"…I am so happy and I can't believe I make a good living doing something I enjoy so much. It doesn't feel like work. In a few weeks I am starting at a beautiful, brand new Day Spa and I think it is going to be amazing. Well, best of luck to you. I hope you love the program you are starting soon.
