Aside from exercise, a good diet and plenty of rest, one of the keys for an effective health regimen for men is regular massage. There’s nothing like a good massage after a long strenuous work week or immediately following a hectic weekend on the golf course or tennis courts.
Most people know that a massage is good for easing one’s pain but they never really considered it as therapeutic. Of course, anyone can perform a massage, which is simply applying pressure or tension on various parts of the body, either manually with one’s hands or feet, or with mechanical aids. As a therapeutic device, a massage can effectively heal injuries and remove pain, ease one’s psychological stress and improve the overall circulation of blood. There is even a technical term for massage which is used specifically for physical and psychological benefits. The term is “therapeutic massage therapy” or manipulative therapy.
As a commercial undertaking, a massage often involves having a client lie or sit down on a massage table or chair or perhaps even a mattress on the floor. He is generally naked except perhaps for a towel or sheet to keep him warm. In some countries, it is mandatory to have the genitals covered during a massage. The treatment begins with the client facing up or down for the first part of the massage and then he rolls over for the second and last part of the massage.
One of the most popular types of massage is the Swedish massage which makes use of flowing strokes that generally head towards the direction of the heart. These strokes are categorized into six basic types: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, compression and vibration. The masseuse applies oil, lotion or cream on the body in order to minimize friction and allow the execution of smooth strokes. It is called the Swedish massage because it is believed to have started with the Swedish fencing master and gymnastics teacher Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839). However, according to some historians, it was actually a Dutchman named Johan Georg Mezger (1838-1909) who originated the basic strokes of the Swedish massage and later on adopted the French names for these strokes.

what “area of study” would massage therapy fall under?
physical science?
if not, what is physical science exactly?
(I’m filling out college/scholarship applications.)
I would consider it a skilled trade in most instances.

What is the education needed for Massage Therapist and Physical Therapist. If I get a maters degree from an accredited physical therapy program. is that all i would need to become a massage therapist? or what else more?
and i already also know i have to get state license.
please any advice would be greatly appreciated.
"non..offered" is correct. You will learn some basic massage techniques as a physical therapist but will only use them occasionally. If you want to truely do massage therapy, you will get a lot more comprehensive education in massage by going to massage therapy school which can be completed in as little as ten months.
Massage can really only be used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program (when done by a PT) and truth be told, most PTs are getting away from performing massage because it doesn't teach the patient how to self manage their condition. We still use manual therapy techniques on a much more ferquent basis which is part of a physical therapists education, but not an MT.
If massage is really your passion, you might be disappointed as a PT. However, if you really want to be a comprehensive therapist, complete your PT degree and then do some continuing education in other massage techniques.
good luck

i am 45 yrs old and male. and still havent found a niche in life, but ne way, getting to old and stoved up for physical labor, was considering going to a massage therapy school. wonder how much money i could make and how long the school and the what the expense of the school wold be, and i live in okla city, ne 1 know of any good schools here for this. thanx doug
My massage school was 650 hours. I also had to do 100 hours of massage.I live in Iowa, but every state is different about the amount of hours u have to have to be liscened. I also work at a massage school the current program takes about 9 months going 3 nights a week (5-9:30)and every other weekend(Sat and sun 9-5:30) The cost of the school is $6500 (and that is cheap)
I have been liscined for 2 1/2 years now and i love it. It is the best thing i have done with my life. You have to take a national exam and then apply for your state liscinse if your state requires a liscince. If you have a good cliental base then the poteinal to make a good amount of money is good. and it also depends if you have your own business or work for someone else or if you are an indepentant condrator. I am an idepentant contranter and i make 60% of every massage i do the rest goes to the owner where i work out of. But i don't have to do anything but show up for the massage. It is very easy for me. A one hour massage in a small town in iowa is $50. I like to do 3 massages a day. So if i were to do 3 one hour massages a day getting paid $30 for each one, and working 5 days a week i would make $450 a week. But depending on how much pressure you use and how you body is able to handle to physical labor(yes there is physical labor) of massge you may be able to do more. If you are a stronger man then it may be easier on your body to give massages than a small women. I hope this helps you in your quest. one more thing you have to do massage because you are passionate about health not because of money if you do it for money you will never be successful you have to care about others and truely want to help them with their physical issues. To be a caring person and to do your best will attract business to you.
