I am starting school for massage therapy in a month and would like insight of people that have taken the class and what they thought. Do you enjoy it and why?

I am currently attending school for massage. State laws are different so be sure to look into that if you aren't planing on practicing in the state you are going to school in.
As for classes depending on the pace it can be quite overwhelming. If it is something you love it is amazing to learn. I mean I am learning how to become a massage therapist. Wow.
The best thing to do to start to prep is start learning your human anatomy. Also find out what kind of massage will be taught at your college and read books on them to get an overview of what to expect. Getting a book list in advance on what you need to be reading for class can be great because you can purchase them ahead of time and often find places to get them cheaper.
You also need to learn how to take care of yourself. This means eating right, stretching, and getting the sleep you need. Get into good habits now you don't have to worry about that when you start classes.
Side note: if you have to bring your own sheets stock up on them so you don't have to worry about hitting the laundry mat every weekend. (even if it is a nice place to study!)

It's a good idea to decide what type of massage you want to do. Relaxation? Sports massage? There are so many different types. Look into schools in your area. Any reputable school will let you stop in & check it out. Talk to the students. Does the school have a job placement policy? Find out what is needed for licensing or certification in your state. Are you comfortable touching strangers? Having to massage hairy backs & funky feet? There is a lot of literature out there to get info. It's also a good idea to check out the number of massage therpists in your area. Is there room for 1 more or is your area so over populated with them that there isn't enough business? The income can be very sporadic. A bunch of clients for a couple of months, then none for a couple of weeks. Check out these websites. They have a lot of great info.

I was thinking about going to a Massage Therapy school here in central FL, where I live. What kind of career prospects are there? Where do Massage Therapists work? How much do they make? Can you make a living on that? I wanted to know as much information as I could get on this, please. Thank you so much!!

There are so many massage therapists here in Florida. There is a lot of competition. I get cards and coupons all the time for this service. Call a spa and ask how much they pay. You might want to check into something else like becoming an insurance adjuster. Some companies train you or you can take a short course and there are always openings. You get a job with benefits and vacation time. There are also promotional opportunities. There are lots and lots of big insurance companies located in central Florida. http://www.inside-insurance.com/insurance-adjuster-training.php
Here is information on training from UCF, http://www.ce.ucf.edu/pc_course.asp?prog=517

I am interested in going to school to become a massage therapist, but I want to know more about it before I enroll in the school. Is it a promising career?

I have been one for 9 years. You have to be able to be liquid in good times and bad. Now, things are good, but with this economy, maybe not so for long. I love what I do, that's first. Also, if you like massages, that's a plus. You've been the client. If you have never had one, go get a few, see how you feel about working on your feet, for an hour, and then doing 3-4 more after that! You have to fit, and healthy. The money is not the best, could be better, but if you love it, then do it. I am blessed with my career. I have more than enough clients. Some weeks I can't get them all in! It is not steady income. When the weather changes, so does your pay! Go talk with one that has quite a bit of experience. Also, specialize. Find a modality that you like done on yourself, and when you graduate take additional certifications. It will make you more rounded and you can use so many modalities in one session to help someone. Make yourself stand out from all the others. That is why people will come to you!

Do you find it rewarding or difficult? Are your clients easy to deal with or are they difficult … do your hands just hurt at the end of the day?

The prerequisites I tell all prospective massage students is the following:

First, "You gotta have the want to". Meaning that you have to have the inner drive to want to help people. If you are going into it just to make money, look into other types of training, because you will burnout right away, because being an MT isn't your average 9-5 job.

Secondly, prepare to be a "professional student", because you will need to know almost as much as doctor does about the human body. When a client of yours asks to work on a certain muscle or asks you why a certain muscle hurts, if you don't know what you are talking about, you will at the least sound uninformed and at the worst, you will lose that client and will probably never get any others, because "people talk". Think about it, when you want to get recommendations, who do you talk to?

So, you can't fake it when you are working on or with the human body. Besides, there is too much mediocrity out there all ready.

Besides Anatomy & Physiology, you will also have to master massage theory, techniques, history, contraindications, physical assessment, as well as Business Law, Record Keeping, Ethics and Traditional Oriental Medicine concepts.

Then be tested upon all of the above not only by the school you are attending, but also by a State and in some states a National massage board.

If you are ready, willing and able to complete all of the above, then have at it !!

I had been thinking about attending massage therapy school and so yesterday I went a recieved my first ever massage. It was such a relaxing environment and I just loved everything about it. It made me really want to consider a career in massage but I just have a few concerns. They are:

Job Security?
Financial Stability?
If you don't have anyone wanting a massage that week you just don't get paid for that week?

I work with three massage therapists. They are all independant. Two of them worked for chiropractors and were paid a percentage. One of them teaches at a college and she said the students complain about thier hands and feet hurting and she says get used to it. Your hand muscles definnatly get tired. They roughly charge about 60.00 an hour and pay monthy rent of 300.00 so depending how busy you are…. It would besafer to work for someone at first and build a clietelle then you can have a base to start on your own with.

I’m thinking about going to school for massage therapy. Will it be hard to get a job after I graduate? Also does it pay well? I’m either doing this or radiography. But I think massaging would be more un than radiography. Any advice is appreciated!

Radiography will offer MUCH more stable work. With massage therapy, either you have to build your own clientele base (which can take a while and can go up and down- especially when people are cutting back on the non-essentials), or you can work for a company that won't pay you too much. Health care actually can go up as everything else goes down, more poor people means more sick people.

Massage therapy isn't as glamorous as it may sound. You would have to massage all types of people, including old people, obese people, and people with skin conditions.

With radiography you get to look inside people without cutting them. I think that's pretty neat.
