If you are feeling a little under the weather your first thought may be to visit the doctor. This is especially true if your symptoms remain even though you have tried various over the counter products. This is exactly the right thing to do. You should always seek the assistance of your healthcare provider if your symptoms become chronic and will not go away.

In some cases the following scenario develops. You see the doctor and get a prescription based upon the diagnosis from your doctor. You return to the doctors office because the prescription did not help you. The doctor says well if that medicine did not work we can try this one. This can repeat itself several times and still you do not feel any better. Eventually you ask your doctor about natural health remedies and learn there really is no medical reason not to try an alternative medical approach. At this point you may be ready to try something new as you feel you have nothing to lose.

A natural remedy is really just that. It is something produced by nature rather than in a laboratory. Natural healing remedies involve using healing substances and techniques that are not generally found in mainstream medicine. These include things like acupuncture, hypnosis, herbal medicines, biofeedback, massage therapy, and homeopathy. Alternative medicine does not involve traditional medicine approaches such as surgery and prescription medications.

Some practitioners such as massage therapists are licensed and have acquired specific skills and education to practice their craft. However herbal healers are not licensed. You need to develop a sense of their skills based upon personal recommendations and their years of experience. Of course the internet is another source of herbal remedies. The more reputable internet companies offer consultation services and provide detailed information on the usage of their products.

One difference with natural remedies is that when you choose this option you will need to take greater charge of your health care than you might have under a doctors care. Alternative medicine may be the right choice for you if traditional medicine has not helped. You can purchase natural herbal remedies through skilled and reputable providers for far less than many prescription medicines. They often have few if any unpleasant side effects those traditional medications are prone to have. The Natural Health magazine is a good source for information on the safe and effective use of herbal remedies. Remember that herbal remedies are not tested by the FDA so you use them at your own risk.

You should not experiment on your own with natural health remedies. Herbs and homeopathic remedies are easily obtainable. That may not be a reliable indication of how safe they are. Do your homework and if you do not know for sure, assume a herb could be dangerous to you and proceed with caution.

There are many great resources. One resource book on how to safely use herbs is Natural Health magazine’s Complete Guide to Safe Herbs by Chris Meletis. Chris is a certified naturopath. This book is quite comprehensive and defines the natural properties of herbs. It clarifies their safety when combined with other herbs or prescription medicines. Chris also covers toxic herbs that should be avoided.

When used appropriately natural health remedies often provide relief from symptoms where traditional medicine has not helped a person. There are fads in natural remedies that should be avoided as well as scams and over hyped infomercial products. Do your homework and find a skilled, reputable practitioner that you can trust.

I am considering massage therapy as a second career and have a few questions. 1) I'm 46, most therapsits I have gone to are "younger", is age an issue in getting a job? 2) Is it a decent paying career? 3) Do you enjoy it? 4) Is it physically difficult on you? 5) I've read that if you are not careful, you can "take on" other people's issues that you are massaging. Does that happen to you?
Thanks so much for taking your time to answer! Peace, k.

One of the best massage therapist i know is 55 years old and he started massage at 50! It will not be an issue if you are physically fit person.Honestly it can be a decent paying career but you have to be willing to work hard. Really hard. When i worked for a chiropractor i got $24 for every hour of masssage i did.The problem with the chiropractors office was that some days i had to do 6-8 hours of straight massage back to back(it really takes a toll on your hands and back even if you do practice good posture)and some days i only did 1 massage. So my paycheck was very up and down.and untill you build up a pretty solid clientelle it will be a very speratic paying job. my boyfriend is a massage therapist too. he works for an accident rehab clinic and makes 17.50 an hour whether he massages or not and he does about 2 massages a day and also gets health insurance –that is another thing to consider–health insurance in a massage job is hard to find.
about the taking on of peoples issue's–you will learn about it in school. it is a transferring of energy if you are in a bad mood and you take it in to a session you can transferr it to that person or vice versa. you learn in shcool how to avoid that.
The main thing is that you really do have to really care for people. people think because you heal there phisical pain that you can heal there mental and emotional pain too so you will hear alot of stories and deal with alot of emotions. being a caring person is a must or you will go crazy.
good luck!!

I’ve read in job descriptions and course curriculum for PTs and PTAs that massage therapy (although touched upon lightly) is a part of it. Well, actually I’ve only looked over the curriculum for PTA, I’m not too sure what exactly the curriculum for a PT entails, but nonetheless, massage therapy is mentioned.

I’ve been working as a PT aide for almost a year now and I’ve never seen it being done though. Although, I do work in a hospital and have yet to experience physical therapy in an outpatient setting. I was also put under the impression that inpatient and outpatient is like night and day. So I don’t really know how their treatments vary.

So, with outpatient physical therapy, is massage therapy ever given (by the PT or PTA) as a part of treatment? If so, how often? Would it be beneficial (not necessarily necessary) for a PT/PTA to possess a license in massage therapy? Would an employer consider that person to be an asset if they did?

I’m just very curious because I’m a Certified Massage Therapist and will be starting the pre-professional phase of a PTA program in a few short months.

Massage is one of those things that can be an adjunct to physical therapy, but is never the main focus. More and more evidence mounts that passive forms of treatments such as modalities and massage are not long term solutions for recovery.

We need to empower patients to learn what they can do to help themselves recover and not foster dependence on the clinician…so you will see less and less massage being done in the clinic and less and less insurance companies paying for it.

When I use massage during treatments, it’s typically not more than 10 minutes or so. Deep friction massage, trigger point release and effluerage are pretty basic techniques that aren’t hard to learn and are probably the primary techniques you would use as a PT or PTA. That being said, it’s typically about a week’s worth of lecture and lab in PT school. It’s not necessary for a PT or PTA to become a licensed massage therapist. It would also not necessarily be considered an asset either in a PT clinic. It does not change the rate of reimbursement to your facility and is never the primary reason why someone is in PT anyway. If someone really wants to have massage, I direct them to a massage therapist anyway. Yet, it certainly wouldn’t hurt your application either.

Good luck in school.

i am a certified Equine massage thearpist and it is proven to be benefical for horses in many different ways wether its for circulation, respiratory or relaxation, many other benefits also apply. If you have a competition horse you will find its performance to be alot stronger.

The muscles of a horse can and will become tight due to the stress of training, shipping and being stalled. It is a good idea to develop a regiment of good nutrition, exercise and message therapy in any regular equine program.

A NOTE TO ALL—-IMPORTANT—-Many times horses will colic and the colic can be so intense that a horse may have to be put down, euthanized. Before you put a horse down due to colic, call a message therapist for a full body message. Keep the telephone number of a message therapist as part of your tack. Place the telephone number under some scotch/cellophane tape on you tack box, along with the name and telephone number of a veterinarian.
